Ancient Kenyan Footprints Show Large Paranthropus boisei Group Walking Together

A trail of eight 1.4-million-year-old footprints in northern Kenya has been linked to adult Paranthropus boisei, with several individuals estimated to be as tall as 1.8 m.

An international team has identified a series of eight footprints preserved near an ancient lakeshore in northern Kenya as belonging to Paranthropus boisei, dating back roughly 1.4 million years. Using analytical methods developed in 2024, the researchers determined that all trackmakers were adults, with several reaching heights of about 1.8 m and masses near 75 kg—sizes previously unrecorded for the species. The assemblage appears to consist mainly of adult males, suggesting that these hominins may have traveled in relatively large, male-dominated groups, perhaps for safety or competition.

This discovery challenges earlier views that Paranthropus boisei was markedly smaller than contemporary Homo erectus. The lake-margin environment, which has yielded hundreds of hominin footprints across multiple sites, seems to have been a recurrent habitat for early humans. The team intends to return to Kenya later this year to investigate additional track sites, hoping to build a broader picture of early Pleistocene anatomy, movement, and social life. The findings underscore the importance of the Lake Turkana region for understanding human evolution.
