Ancient Macedonian Royal Gymnasium Unearthed at Mieza Near Mount Vermio
Archaeologists are uncovering a vast royal gymnasium at the ancient site of Mieza in northern Greece, linked to the education of Alexander the Great.
A team of archaeologists is slowly exposing the royal gymnasium of ancient Mieza, an institution created under Philip II to train the future elite of Macedonia. Situated at the base of Mount Vermio in northern Greece, the excavation has uncovered extensive mosaic flooring, multiple halls and a striking colonnade stretching roughly 200 metres. These architectural elements suggest a scale similar to that of Aigai, the ancient Macedonian capital.
The find offers a physical setting for the historic accounts that Aristotle taught the young Alexander there. The project blends field excavation, geophysical mapping and careful preservation, with specialists such as Maria Parziali, Tasos Kakamanoudis, Anastasia Georgiadou, Panagiotis Iossif, Grigoris Tsokas, Aggeliki Georgiadou and Stergios Pitoulias contributing to the effort.
