Ancient Roman Villa Mosaic Honors Owner's Pets Ocean the Dog and Emerald the Cat
Archaeologists uncovered a 1,800-year-old mosaic in a Turkish villa that appears to memorialize a pet dog named Ocean and a cat named Emerald.
During recent digs at the ancient city of Adramytteion, Turkey, a richly colored mosaic measuring about 5 m by 3.6 m was discovered in the main reception hall of a Roman villa from the late second to third centuries AD. The floor artwork features fifteen panels arranged in three rows, showing birds, fish, felines, as well as mythic figures such as Medusa and Pegasus. Notably, two panels portray a pale cat seated on a blue-green cushion and a leaping dog, each bearing Greek inscriptions that translate to “Emerald” and “Ocean.”
Scholars believe the dog’s name may allude to the coastal location, while the cat’s name hints at the owner’s possible ties to Roman Egypt, where emeralds were mined. The mosaic’s elaborate polychrome palette and costly materials underscore the wealth and status of the villa’s proprietor. Findings will appear in the Journal of Mosaic Research.
