Ancient Texas fossil reveals insects once sported dozens of legs

A fossil from West Texas shows an early insect with many extra legs, challenging the notion that six legs have always been standard.

A West Texas shale fossil, now called Chosha praecursor, displays an unprecedented number of legs for an insect, with nine extra pairs of stubby limbs on its abdomen. Initially thought to be a juvenile crustacean, the specimen remained in storage until a paleontologist recognized its true nature after consulting a Russian textbook. Detailed examination with polarized light revealed classic insect characteristics, including a three-segment thorax, elongated abdomen, and distinctive antennae, alongside the unusual paddle-like appendages.

Similar multi-legged fossils from Scotland and Illinois suggest a broader group of semi-aquatic proto-insects. These organisms likely shed surplus limbs as they transitioned fully onto land, eventually giving rise to the six-legged insects familiar today. Experts say the discovery fills a critical gap in the fossil record of early insect evolution.
