ANCOM vice president Pavel Popescu downplays US role in ousting Bolojan government

Pavel Popescu, who resigned from parliament in October 2023 after being confirmed as ANCOM vice president with votes from PSD and PNL, used a Facebook post to comment on recent US statements regarding Romania's political scene. He claimed that, given today’s Romanian politics, the United States pulling down the Bolojan cabinet would not constitute a major tragedy and that Washington has been asking him about the timeline for a new government.

Popescu, a vocal Trump ally, expressed surprise that the US has not reduced its diplomatic representation in Bucharest and dismissed the Greek ambassador's remarks about US involvement in the cabinet's fall. He also referenced a report about the ambassador’s claim that the US acted to prevent Romania from buying overpriced gas. The post sparked reactions from USR politicians, including a criminal complaint filed by Alexandru Dumitriu and a response from USR leader Dominic Fritz, who questioned PSD and AUR leaders about meetings with the ambassador.
