ΔΕΗ and Amazon Web Services sign MoU for 300 MW data centre in Western Macedonia

A memorandum of understanding between Greece’s utility ΔΕΗ and Amazon Web Services details the creation of a new data centre in the town of Agios Dimitrios, Western Macedonia. Under the deal, AWS will lease the facility for a fifteen-year period once construction is finished, while ΔΕΗ will supply the site, existing structures and the supporting energy infrastructure. The centre will initially operate with 300 MW of power, and the parties will assess a potential expansion to as much as 1 GW, subject to mutual agreement and market conditions.

Energy will be sourced from renewable power purchase agreements that ΔΕΗ will provide, supporting Amazon’s target of zero net-carbon emissions by 2040. Both companies also plan to investigate long-term collaboration in cloud services and artificial-intelligence technologies to aid ΔΕΗ’s digital transformation. The MoU is binding, but all commercial terms remain contingent on due-diligence, network connection and regulatory approvals.
