Andalusia launches new programme treating childhood obesity as chronic disease

Andalusia's regional government has introduced the OrbiTA programme, redefining childhood obesity as a chronic condition and integrating it into primary-care pathways.

Facing a 35.6% overweight rate among children, Andalusia's regional government unveiled the OrbiTA programme to treat childhood obesity as a chronic disease rather than a cosmetic issue. Screening will start at routine check-ups from age two, with any suspected case triggering a dedicated appointment within 15 days and a personalized care plan lasting up to 18 months. The new protocol revises diagnostic methods, referral pathways, and success metrics, and it emphasizes coordinated primary-care management with specialist input for severe metabolic risk.

Social inequality is highlighted, noting higher prevalence in lower-income, less-educated families, and the approach aims to reduce stigma by involving the whole family. BMI will serve only as a screening tool, while diagnosis will focus on excess adipose tissue affecting health.

Why it matters

Treating childhood obesity as a chronic disease could improve long-term health outcomes and reduce social stigma for millions of children.
