Andhra Pradesh to invest ₹15,000 crore in new MDL greenfield shipyard

Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd, a Navratna defence PSU under the Ministry of Defence, entered a memorandum of understanding with National Shipbuilding and Heavy Industries Park-AP to construct a greenfield shipyard at Dugarajapatnam. The venture foresees an investment of about ₹15,000 crore over the next five to seven years, contingent on approvals, and aims to generate around 45,000 direct and indirect jobs in the state.

The facility will have a design capacity of 1.2 million gross tonnage annually, with potential expansion, and will produce tankers, bulk carriers, container ships, LNG carriers and other specialised vessels. The accompanying port, estimated at ₹9,513 crore, will be built by the Government of India. Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu highlighted the project's role in advancing Andhra Pradesh’s maritime ecosystem and supporting India's ambition to rank among the world’s top five shipbuilding nations by 2047. Senior officials from MDL, Visakhapatnam Port Authority and the Andhra Pradesh government affirmed their commitment to the cluster’s development.
