Andre Rankel appointed head coach of Germany's men's ice hockey team
The German Ice Hockey Association announced former player Andre Rankel as the new coach of the men's national squad.
During a Munich briefing, the German Ice Hockey Association unveiled Andre Rankel as the successor to Canadian-born Harold Kreis as coach of the men's national team. Rankel, who spent three seasons assisting Eisbären Berlin, steps into his first head-coaching position despite lacking prior experience in that role. DEB sport director Christian Künast emphasized Rankel's familiarity with team leadership and his readiness for the job.
The organization signed Rankel to a four-year deal, signaling a long-term development plan. Rankel, a former captain who won multiple DEL titles and represented Germany at the 2010 Olympics, will debut at the Deutschland Cup in Düsseldorf before the World Championship hosted in Germany next May. DEB CEO Frank Lutz highlighted the appointment as part of a generational shift for German hockey.
