Andrew Sears, a left-handed pitcher from West Warwick, Rhode Island, joined the Detroit Tigers on the mound for his first major-league outing in a game versus the Kansas City Royals. After transferring to UConn for the 2023 spring season and posting 74 strikeouts in 62 innings, he was drafted in the tenth round of the 2023 MLB Draft. Sears progressed through the Tigers’ minor-league ranks, posting a 2.16 ERA across four levels and remaining unbeaten in two Triple-A appearances.
In his debut, he worked four innings, allowing five runs on six hits and striking out three, and was credited with the loss. The debut makes him the 22nd UConn player ever in the majors and the sixth from the program in the 2026 season, a new program record.
