Android Auto Offers More Customization and Apps Than Apple CarPlay, Analysts Find

Android Auto delivers deeper customization, multi-window layouts and a hidden developer menu that lets users run more apps, while Apple CarPlay remains more restricted, though Apple is testing CarPlay Ultra and upgrading Siri.

Car manufacturers have widely adopted both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, but the platforms vary significantly in depth of functionality. Android Auto lets drivers arrange maps, media and widgets across the screen, use personal phone wallpapers and access a concealed developer menu for advanced tweaks such as sideloading apps or changing video resolution. This openness also permits third-party applications like CarStream to run, offering features such as YouTube playback for passengers.

In contrast, CarPlay focuses on a single-app view, permits limited grid rearrangement and split-screen for navigation and music, and confines wallpapers to a preset selection. Apple is experimenting with a next-generation CarPlay Ultra, reportedly tested by Aston Martin and Tesla, and has integrated Gemini-based AI into Siri, which currently still lags behind Google’s Gemini in natural-language handling. While Apple’s updates may eventually close the disparity, Android Auto presently offers more customization and app flexibility for tech-savvy drivers.

Why it matters

Understanding the feature gap helps consumers choose the infotainment system that best fits their driving needs and signals future trends in car tech.
