Andrzej Poczobut Announces Plan to Return to Belarus Next Week Despite Safety Risks

Former detainee and Polish minority activist Andrzej Poczobut said he will travel to Belarus next week, citing his commitment to the community despite security concerns.

During a session of the Polish Union in Belarus' Supreme Council in Białystok, leaders decided to shift the organization’s summit from September to March 2027, citing security considerations. Despite the schedule change, activist Andrzej Poczobut reaffirmed his decision to return to Belarus, stating that the recent meeting reinforced his resolve. The 53-year-old, who spent 1,860 days in prison and a penal colony after his 2021 arrest, said his travel is driven by the desire to continue work for the Polish minority and the Union, not personal motives.

He plans to depart next week to meet community members he has not seen for five years. Officials warned that his return carries significant risk given the Belarusian regime’s past actions against Polish activists.
