Andy Burnham says Labour will not partner with Greens after antisemitic motion

Andy Burnham told MPs he will not consider any Labour-Green coalition after the Green Party adopted a “Zionism is Racism” motion at its Brighton conference.

At Prime Minister’s Questions, Andy Burnham sharply denounced the Green Party’s recent “Zionism is Racism” motion, labeling it antisemitic and stating Labour will not enter any coalition with a party that endorses it. The motion, approved at a Brighton conference organized by Zack Polanski, urges Israel to be treated as apartheid South Africa and has triggered a split within the Greens, with former leaders Caroline Luca, Adrian Ramsay and Carla Denyer opposing it.

Burnham’s stance came after Nigel Farage urged Labour to reject “sectarian politics” and a former Labour minister echoed that view. Polanski missed the vote while campaigning in the Holborn and St Pancras by-election. The Greens’ Standing Orders Committee may prevent any amendment to the policy for up to two years, meaning the motion could remain until at least the autumn 2028 conference.

Why it matters

It shows Labour refusing to ally with a party whose policy is deemed antisemitic, shaping future left-wing coalition prospects.
