Andy Burnham slams Starmer government for negativity and factionalism

Andy Burnham accused Sir Keir Starmer's Labour administration of being overly negative and divided during a podcast interview.

During a Rest Is Politics interview with Rory Stewart and Alistair Campbell, Andy Burnham criticised Sir Keir Starmer's Labour government as excessively negative and factional. He contended that a functional Labour administration should ensure every wing feels represented, referencing historic voices such as Dennis Skinner and John Prescott. Burnham recalled earlier tensions over the Gorton and Denton by-election but said his relationship with Starmer remains intact.

He affirmed that the UK government has confirmed Russian meddling in the Brexit referendum and urged transparency for voters in Germany and France. Additionally, Burnham promised to release records of his 2021 meeting with the Abu Dhabi-backed owners of Manchester City, amid the club's recent financial-rules breach. The interview highlighted both political grievances and Burnham's ongoing involvement with regional sports matters.

Why it matters

Burnham's critique signals internal Labour tensions and may influence public perception of the government's unity.
