Angels dismiss three pitching coaches as season woes deepen
The Los Angeles Angels terminated pitching coach Mike Maddux, bullpen coach Dom Chiti and assistant pitching coach Darryl Scott on Tuesday.
On August 11, the Los Angeles Angels released three members of their pitching staff: Mike Maddux, Dom Chiti and Darryl Scott. Interim GM John Mozeliak explained that the decision follows the club's ranking at 24th in earned-run average, 30th in walks and 25th in WHIP. With only seven weeks remaining, the organization intends to use the period to evaluate additional steps for its pitching program.
Tim Leveque, a former Double-A Rocket City pitching coach who has worked with Mozeliak for two decades in St. Louis, will serve as interim pitching coach, while Michael Wuertz, previously a minor-league assistant pitching coordinator, takes over as interim bullpen coach. The Angels currently hold a 45-74 record, the lowest in the American League, and both Mozeliak and manager Kurt Suzuki have contracts expiring at season's end, leaving their futures uncertain.
