Anjun Industrial CEO and 12 Others Charged Over Deadly Daejeon Factory Fire

The Daejeon Metropolitan Police have sent the case of Anjun Industrial’s chief executive Son Ju-hwan and twelve additional individuals to the prosecution following a March factory fire that claimed 14 lives and wounded 60 workers. Prosecutors will charge the group with occupational and gross negligence, breaches of the firefighting system law, and fabrication of safety-inspection evidence. The inquiry revealed large stores of flammable sludge and inadequate ventilation that intensified the blaze.
An unauthorized structural change in the break-room damaged the fire partition and kept the fire-protection door open, while the alarm that sounded at the outset was immediately turned off according to a workplace manual. Police also assert that company officials manipulated safety-inspection paperwork. The case highlights severe lapses in industrial safety and potential criminal liability for senior management.
