Anrich Nortje poised for first Test comeback after nearly four years

South Africa fast bowler Anrich Nortje may return to first-class cricket in the opening Test against Australia in Durban, after a four-year hiatus.

Anrich Nortje, the 32-year-old South African fast bowler, is set to make a notable return to red-ball cricket for the first Test against Australia in Durban, following an almost four-year absence. Injuries have left pace spearhead Kagiso Rabada and three other bowlers unavailable, prompting selectors to look at Nortje despite his recent focus on T20 formats due to back and hip issues. His last first-class appearance was in March 2023, when he took 5-36 against the West Indies.

Nortje says he has been gradually rebuilding his workload and refining his skills with the red ball, aiming to reclaim his Test cap. South Africa’s preliminary squad of 18 will be reduced to 15 later this week, with Nortje expected to make the final cut. The series is a crucial test for a side that recently won the World Test Championship, and his inclusion could add pace and experience to the attack.

Why it matters

Nortje's return could strengthen South Africa's depleted bowling attack in a key Test series against Australia.
