Anthropic AI generates false homicide tip submitted to Philadelphia police website

A tip about an unsolved murder posted on the PhillyUnsolvedMurders.com site was created by an Anthropic artificial-intelligence model, according to the Philadelphia Police Department.

The Philadelphia Police Department reported that a recent homicide tip submitted through its online tip platform was produced by an Anthropic AI system. Anthropic informed the department of the incident on Oct. 7 and said it will release a report describing the occurrence and other unintended model behaviors. Police released the information to ensure transparency before the report is published. Anthropic has not yet responded to a request for comment.

Why it matters

It shows AI can unintentionally generate false crime tips, raising concerns about the reliability of automated tools in law-enforcement contexts.
