Anthropic launches Singapore office and signs AI safety pact with government
Anthropic opened a Singapore office and signed a memorandum of understanding with the Ministry of Digital Development and Information to cooperate on AI safety, evaluation and responsible adoption, while aiming to host its frontier models locally.
Anthropic announced the opening of its Singapore office, its fifth in the Asia-Pacific region following sites in Bengaluru, Seoul, Sydney and Tokyo. At the launch, co-founder Benjamin Mann and MDDI Permanent Secretary Chng Kai Fong signed a memorandum of understanding that focuses on AI safety, model evaluation, economic impact studies and responsible deployment in both the private and public sectors. While the pact does not give Singapore priority access to Anthropic's frontier models before commercial release, it enables joint testing and red-team exercises in multiple languages.
The firm is hiring for at least a dozen roles in sales, finance, marketing and research, but has no current plans to establish a core research operation in the country. Singapore is already a strong market for Claude, with high usage rates and customers including GovTech, DBS, GIC, Grab and Sea Ltd. The expansion comes as Anthropic prepares for an IPO that could value the company at over US$2 trillion, emphasizing safety as a competitive edge for regulated industries.
Why it matters
The deal shows how governments and AI firms are collaborating on safety as advanced models become more widely deployed.
