Anthropic launches Spanish subsidiary in Madrid, appoints former Google exec as head

Anthropic, the American artificial-intelligence company, officially entered the Spanish market with a new Madrid-based subsidiary, adding to its existing offices in London, Dublin, Paris, Zurich, Munich and Milan. The firm appointed Cristina Pitarch, a veteran of Salesforce, Informatica and most recently Google Cloud Security for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, as the country manager. In remarks to the press, Pitarch argued that a deliberate slowdown of AI progress would allow better safety oversight and urged democratic governments to coordinate regulatory frameworks.

Anthropic highlighted that its Claude assistant is already deployed by Spanish giants such as Santander, CaixaBank, BBVA, Telefónica, Konecta, Amadeus, Indra and Ferrovial, and it aims to support both large enterprises and smaller firms. The company also plans to involve external evaluators and its own staff in testing model safety, while fostering local talent through partnerships with institutions like ISDI Business School.
