Anthropic mulls direct cash payouts if AI displaces workers, cites charitable fund plan

Anthropic said it could use its public-benefit fund to give money directly to people or nonprofits if artificial intelligence leads to job losses.

Anthropic disclosed that its public-benefit arm could be used to provide financial assistance directly to citizens or charitable organisations if AI-driven automation threatens jobs. In a statement the company said it is exploring broad donations to established non-profits or direct cash grants to particular demographic groups, without detailing mechanisms, schedule or scale. It intends to transfer five percent of its equity into the fund, a move that requires shareholder approval.

Market analysts have placed Anthropic’s valuation in the multi-trillion-dollar range as it prepares for a major stock market listing later this year. If the fund is topped up as the company grows, the pool could amount to tens of billions of dollars, potentially offering a sizable safety net for displaced workers. The proposal arrives amid mounting pressure on tech firms to address the socioeconomic impact of rapid AI advancement, with parallel discussions in Finland and the United States about AI’s labor market effects.

Why it matters

It shows how a leading AI firm is preparing financial safeguards for workers potentially displaced by automation.
