Anthropic unveils Claude Sonnet 5.5 model as it gears up for IPO
Anthropic released Claude Sonnet 5.5, a faster, lower-cost AI model, while preparing for an upcoming initial public offering.
On Monday, Anthropic announced the launch of Claude Sonnet 5.5, the second model in its 5.5 series, aimed at enterprise workloads. The service is priced at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, unchanged from Sonnet 5, but the company says it now needs fewer tokens to complete identical tasks. Sonnet 5.5 is marketed as a faster, more affordable complement to the recently released Claude Opus 5.5, which is priced at $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output tokens.
Anthropic noted that about 80% of its business comes from corporate customers, naming Salesforce, Databricks, Goldman Sachs and Novo Nordisk among them. The launch comes as CEO Dario Amodei called for a slowdown in AI capability releases to address safety risks. A third model, Haiku 5.5, designed for high-volume rapid processing, is expected shortly, as the company moves toward a planned IPO.
