Anthropic’s IPO Looms as CFO Krishna Rao Tackles Rising Compute Costs

Anthropic filed an S-1 to list on Nasdaq, showing explosive revenue growth but huge losses and soaring compute expenses, putting CFO Krishna Rao under pressure to prove sustainable profitability.

Anthropic has lodged a Form S-1 registration with the SEC, seeking a Nasdaq debut under the symbol ANT as it prepares for an IPO. The filing reveals that revenue climbed to $16.29 billion in the six months to June 30, up sharply from $1.16 billion a year earlier, while net loss ballooned to $80.75 billion, mainly because of a $72.39 billion fair-value adjustment on financing instruments. Operating loss fell to $693 million from $2.14 billion, and compute spending surged to $8.95 billion, more than triple the prior year’s $2.33 billion.

CFO Krishna Rao, appointed in 2024, devotes roughly a third of his effort to securing compute resources from Amazon, Google and Nvidia, noting that the business currently earns over two dollars for each dollar spent on infrastructure. Analysts at Yorkville Ives & Co. view the filing as a pivotal moment for the AI sector, while Moody’s highlights the increased transparency on AI-lab finances. The company warns that token-price pressure or lagging behind rivals could erode demand, leaving Rao to balance growth, profitability and large infrastructure commitments.

Why it matters
