Anti-corruption watchdog urges MACC to launch probe into alleged RM350,000 bribe
Malaysia Corruption Watch called on the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission to set up a special team to investigate social-media claims that a senior officer took a RM350,000 bribe in 2017.
Malaysia Corruption Watch has pressed the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission to form a dedicated investigation team or independent committee after social-media posts alleged that a senior MACC officer accepted a RM350,000 bribe in November 2017. MCW leader Jais Abdul Karim noted that no official clarification has been provided regarding any prior inquiry. He called on the MACC chief commissioner and the Anti-Corruption Advisory Board chairman to act swiftly, tasking the proposed team with confirming the allegation's authenticity, collecting testimonies and examining any available documentation.
Karim highlighted the seriousness of the matter, urging Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to intervene given MACC's pivotal role in upholding integrity. He stressed that the commission must not only be clean but also be perceived as clean, demanding full disclosure of any investigation outcomes to preserve public trust.
Why it matters
Alleged corruption within Malaysia's chief anti-graft agency could undermine public confidence in its ability to fight corruption.
