Anti-graft court orders Manila property title transferred to Philippine government

The Sandiganbayan upheld the state’s claim over a commercial lot in Paco, Manila, directing the Register of Deeds to issue a title in the Republic’s name.

The anti-graft tribunal Sandiganbayan affirmed the government’s ownership of a commercial parcel in Paco, Manila, originally registered to Taggat Industries, Inc. The September 30 order directs the Register of Deeds of Manila to nullify Transfer Certificate of Title No. 78732 and to register the land under the Republic of the Philippines, echoing a December 2015 decision on the same assets. The case stems from a 1987 civil filing by the Presidential Commission on Good Government against businessman Alfonso Lim Sr., who held extensive timber licenses.

Waivers submitted in 2010 by his son, Alfonso Lim Jr., and a later waiver by Lim Sr.’s estate, surrendered any claim to the property and other assets listed in Annex A of the complaint. The court’s directive finalizes the transfer of the title to the state.

Why it matters

The ruling secures state ownership of assets alleged to be acquired through corruption, reinforcing anti-graft efforts.
