Anti-immigrant protesters mistake RNIB for RNLI and launch false accusations
Anti-immigration demonstrators wrongly claimed the Royal National Institute of Blind People was aiding small-boat migrants, confusing it with the lifeboat charity. The RNIB clarified it does not run lifeboats and condemned the misinformation.
During recent anti-immigrant protests, participants alleged that the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) was facilitating migrant crossings in the English Channel, a claim stemming from a mix-up with the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). The RNIB responded on social media, emphasizing its focus on supporting blind individuals and praising the RNLI’s rescue work. Meanwhile, RNLI volunteers have faced serious harassment, threats and doxxing by far-right activists, prompting a Sussex Police investigation. Digital secretary Lisa Nandy denounced the attacks on volunteers and said she would raise concerns about online threats with social-media platforms.
