Anti-Ulez activist sentenced to 15 years for homemade bomb attack on London camera

Kevin Rees received a 15-year prison term after detonating a homemade explosive beside a Ulez camera in Sidcup, an act that triggered a counter-terror investigation.

In December 2023, Kevin Rees, a retired electrician, drove to Sidcup, south-east London, and planted a homemade device beside a newly installed Ulez camera. The bomb, made from black powder and other readily available chemicals, exploded, sending debris over 100 metres, breaking a car windscreen, a lamp post and a child's bedroom window. CCTV footage showed sparks raining down and nearby vehicles shaking, while a van alarm sounded.

Counter-terror officers arrested Rees two weeks later, finding additional explosive materials and three homemade stun guns at his home. At Woolwich Crown Court he was found guilty of causing an explosion to endanger life, possessing prohibited weapons and was sentenced to 15 years in prison, with the Crown Prosecution Service emphasizing the attack was a deliberate act of terror rather than mere protest.

Why it matters

The case highlights the severe legal consequences for violent protest against public policy and the use of terrorism powers against domestic extremists.
