Anti-Zionist collective plans Toronto workshop to add pro-Palestinian artist pages to Wikipedia

The group Stop Art Washing will hold a Wikipedia editing workshop in Toronto on Oct. 22 to create entries honoring Palestinians it calls “martyred” artists.

Stop Art Washing, an anti-Zionist organization of art workers across Canada, is organizing a Wikipedia editing workshop in Toronto on Oct. 22. The event, promoted on Instagram, aims to populate the encyclopedia with pages that honor Palestinians the group describes as “martyred” artists and to expose what it calls Canadian Zionist backers of genocide. Wikipedia’s own guidelines prohibit the site from being used as a propaganda vehicle and demand neutral language.

Since Oct. 7, 2023, edits on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict have risen sharply, drawing accusations of bias from advocates on both sides. In a recent interview, Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales criticized a Gaza-genocide article as “terrible” and not meeting neutrality standards. Earlier analysis identified a small group of editors influencing a page on South Africa’s genocide case against Israel, suggesting patterns of anti-Israel bias. The planned workshop reflects ongoing disputes over how the conflict is represented online.

Why it matters

The effort could shape public perception of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict by influencing a widely used information source.
