Anup Bagchi appointed MD/CEO of HDFC Bank, easing leadership uncertainty
The Reserve Bank of India approved Anup Bagchi as the new managing director and chief executive of HDFC Bank, ending a period of succession doubt.
The Reserve Bank of India confirmed Anup Bagchi as the next managing director and chief executive of HDFC Bank, filling the leadership gap left by Sashidhar Jagdishan, whose tenure ends on October 26, 2026. Bagchi brings more than thirty years of experience from ICICI Bank and currently leads ICICI Life. Brokerage analysts view the move as a positive step toward rebuilding investor trust and suggest that an outsider may provide a fresh perspective on strategy and governance.
They highlight priorities such as stabilising senior management, boosting deposit growth, enhancing branch productivity and digital capabilities, and addressing past mis-selling issues. Earnings are expected to improve from FY28E onward, with potential for a re-rating if growth and margin targets are met. Some analysts caution that integrating the distinct cultures of ICICI and HDFC could pose short-term challenges.
Why it matters
Leadership clarity at India's top private bank could boost market confidence and affect the broader financial sector.
