Anwar notes Lee Chean Chung had been absent from PKR for over a year before quitting

PKR president Anwar Ibrahim said Lee Chean Chung stopped attending party meetings more than a year before resigning as Petaling Jaya MP today.

Anwar Ibrahim confirmed that Lee Chean Chung had been disengaged from PKR meetings and the party congress for more than a year before announcing his resignation as the Petaling Jaya MP. The resignation follows a three-year suspension of Lee's party membership, prompting him to formally step down from the party on Monday. Lee told the Dewan Rakyat Speaker that he could not continue receiving a parliamentary salary while being prevented from carrying out his responsibilities, and he highlighted grievances over the Urban Renewal Act, foreign worker management, the Sales and Service Tax and university admissions for STPM holders.

Anwar reassured that development projects in Petaling Jaya would proceed despite the change in representation. The vacancy left by Lee will be filled later, while his constituency service centre will remain operational for local residents.

Why it matters

The resignation creates a vacant parliamentary seat and reflects internal tensions within Malaysia's ruling coalition.
