Aomori wineries unite to pursue official regional wine designation

Nine wineries in Japan’s Aomori prefecture have banded together to form an association that will lobby for a Japanese government geographical indication for their products. Sun Mamoru Winery, a pioneer established in 1998 on the Shimokita Peninsula, won a gold prize for its pinot noir in 2016 and attributes its success to the cool summer yamase winds, iron-rich volcanic soil and ample sunlight that balance acidity and sugar.

Tsugaru Winery, based in Tsuruta and known for its Steuben-grape wine, applies techniques derived from traditional European winemaking to create a clear, spicy profile. Association chair Yoshihisa Kitamura and staff member Hisae Ishizuka say the climate and environment shape the wine’s character and aim to raise Aomori’s profile as a major wine producer. The group’s goal is to secure a geographical indication that guarantees quality and promotes the region’s reputation beyond its famed rice, sake, apples and seafood.
