APEC energy ministers convene in Beijing to tackle soaring power demand and boost regional security
APEC energy ministers met in Beijing to discuss strengthening energy security as electricity consumption in the region could nearly double by 2060.
Energy ministers from the Asia-Pacific gathered in Beijing for the 16th APEC Energy Ministerial, urging stronger regional cooperation to meet soaring electricity demand that could almost double by 2060. Ding Xuexiang, China’s vice premier, emphasized the bloc’s share of global energy production and the importance of coordinated action. Participants warned that AI training centres are already consuming electricity at a rate that outpaces overall demand growth, while also offering tools for better forecasting and grid operation.
The ministers called for wider deployment of energy-efficient technologies, talent bridging the energy and digital sectors, and robust cybersecurity. Expanding reliable power to underserved areas through off-grid and mini-grid solutions, improving financing for households, and ensuring transparent pricing were also prioritized. Finally, they discussed diversifying supply chains, strengthening critical infrastructure such as submarine cables, and advancing APEC’s targets of doubling renewable energy share by 2030 and cutting energy intensity by 2035.
