Appellate court set to decide former President Yoon's perjury case

An appellate panel at the Seoul High Court is scheduled to deliver its decision on former President Yoon Suk Yeol's perjury charge, stemming from testimony given during former Prime Minister Han Duck-soo's insurrection trial. Yoon was accused of falsely stating that he had independently called a Cabinet meeting before announcing martial law on Dec. 3, 2024, when prosecutors allege the meeting was arranged at Han's urging to give the decree a veneer of legitimacy.

A lower court in May had acquitted Yoon, finding his intent appeared independent. In one outlet hearing, special counsel Cho Eun-suk's team is seeking a fine of 10 million won. Yoon, who is currently jailed, also faces a life-sentence conviction from a February district-court ruling for leading the short-lived martial-law attempt, among other pending cases.
