Apple adds AI video summaries to HomeKit cameras, but storage costs soar
Apple's iOS 27 update brings AI-generated video summaries to HomeKit security cameras, requiring higher-tier iCloud+ plans that can cost up to $60 a month.
With iOS 27, Apple rolls out an AI-driven video summarization tool for HomeKit Secure Video, producing natural-language descriptions and clustering related clips from multiple cameras. The system relies on Apple Intelligence and Face Recognition, as demonstrated in a demo where a man named Robert arrives with a fruit bowl. To use the feature, owners must have a second-generation HomePod, HomePod Mini, Apple TV 4K, or an iPhone 15 Pro or newer, and must subscribe to a higher-capacity iCloud+ plan—2 TB for one camera ($9.99/month), 6 TB for two cameras ($29.99/month), and 12 TB for up to five cameras ($59.99/month).
These fees are in addition to any existing family iCloud storage. Apple allows selective activation of the AI summaries to limit costs, and warns that storage tiers and compatible devices may evolve over time. The optional service adds a notable recurring expense for users seeking AI-enhanced home monitoring.
Why it matters
Consumers must weigh added convenience against substantially higher monthly cloud storage fees for AI-enabled home security.
