Apple cuts at least 60 VR staff as new CEO prepares to take helm

Apple has dismissed roughly 60 workers from its virtual-reality division just before John Ternus assumes the chief-executive role.

Apple reportedly eliminated at least 60 positions tied to its virtual-reality effort, according to a source cited by AppleInsider. The cuts target staff within the Apple Vision Group and related roles, effectively dismantling a dedicated VR development team. The move coincides with John Ternus preparing to take over as chief executive on September 1, with Tim Cook transitioning to executive chairman.

Although the Vision Pro headset, launched in February 2024 at $3,499, is still being sold, its development appears to be on pause under the new leadership. Earlier reports indicated that the Vision Products Group had already been fragmented, with hardware and software engineers absorbed into broader Apple engineering units. Despite public statements from visionOS marketing lead Steve Sinclair and Ternus himself affirming ongoing commitment, sales estimates suggest the device has not met its ambitious targets.

Why it matters

The cuts signal a shift in Apple's VR strategy just as new leadership takes charge, affecting jobs and future product direction.
