Apple Maps now displays paid listings at the top of search results
Apple has begun showing advertisements in its Maps app, placing them at the top of the “suggested places” list and search results for users in the United States and Canada.
Apple Maps has introduced paid placements that appear as the first entry in the “suggested places” area and at the top of search result lists. The company announced in March that it would allow businesses to buy these premium spots, and the feature began rolling out this week, initially reaching users in the United States and Canada with further expansion planned. Each ad is identified by a blue “ad” icon, similar to the format used by Google Maps for years.
When the app is opened, users see a notice explaining that ads are generated from their approximate location, current search terms, or map view, and that the advertising information is not tied to their Apple Account. Apple reiterates that personal data remains on the device and is not collected or shared with outside parties. The move marks a shift toward monetizing the navigation service while emphasizing privacy safeguards.
Why it matters
Apple Maps ads signal a new revenue stream for Apple and raise privacy considerations for users.
