Apple Music to Add AI Transparency Labels to Tracks Later This Year
Apple Music announced it will require AI transparency tags on songs generated with artificial intelligence, with the new labeling system expected to roll out later this year.
Apple Music informed its partners that it will introduce AI-specific labels for songs created using generative artificial intelligence, with implementation slated for later this year. The company had previously introduced transparency tags in March, allowing record labels and distributors to flag material AI involvement. Under the new rules, any content where AI contributes a significant portion must include an AI Transparency Tag, covering tracks that are primarily derived from AI platforms.
Apple Music did not explain how compliance will be monitored or enforced. This initiative follows a joint RIAA and IFPI call for streaming services to label AI content similarly to explicit warnings, and mirrors Spotify's recent decision to label AI artists and exclude them from recommendation algorithms. The change is part of Apple Music's broader effort to curb fraud and manipulation linked to AI-generated music, a concern highlighted by head Oliver Schusser, who noted that AI songs now make up over a third of new monthly uploads, though they represent less than 1 percent of overall usage.
Why it matters
Labeling AI-generated music helps listeners identify synthetic content and curbs potential fraud on streaming platforms.
