Apple partners with LG to debut a new line of smart home devices

Apple is working with LG to release a series of smart home products, including a doorbell, thermostat, lock and cameras, that will tie into Apple’s upcoming HomeKit hub.

Apple and LG have entered a second-party development deal to produce a suite of smart-home gadgets that will carry LG branding while working seamlessly with Apple’s HomeKit ecosystem. The announced lineup comprises a video doorbell, an indoor thermostat, a deadbolt lock, an outdoor security camera and a floodlight camera, all built to support the Thread and Matter protocols. The lock will include ultra-wideband capabilities that can unlock the door as a user approaches.

These products are timed to launch alongside Apple’s anticipated smart-home hub, a Siri-enabled device with a six-inch screen expected at an event on October 13. The same unveiling may also feature a refreshed HomePod mini and an upgraded Apple TV, underscoring Apple’s expanding focus on the connected home market.

Why it matters

The partnership expands Apple’s HomeKit ecosystem and brings more interoperable smart-home options to consumers.
