Apple revamps Siri with AI upgrades to compete against ChatGPT and Alexa

Apple introduced a revamped Siri AI at WWDC 2026, adding contextual conversation and cross-app actions to narrow the gap with ChatGPT, Alexa and Google Assistant.

Apple’s latest Siri AI, unveiled at WWDC 2026, marks a shift toward a more conversational, context-aware assistant that can reference screen content, maintain dialogue history and execute tasks across multiple apps. The rollout follows years of lag behind Amazon’s Alexa and Google Assistant, which expanded voice control into homes and leveraged deep search expertise. After hiring former Google AI chief John Giannandrea in 2018 and later replacing him with Mike Rockwell, Apple delayed promised features in 2025, prompting a class-action lawsuit over alleged false advertising.

The 2026 version also emphasizes privacy through on-device processing and Apple’s Private Cloud Compute. Analysts see the move as Apple’s effort to catch up in the generative-AI race sparked by OpenAI’s ChatGPT launch in 2022.

Why it matters

Siri’s upgrade could reshape how billions interact with their devices and affect competition in the fast-growing AI assistant market.
