Apple reverses plan, keeps Hide My Email on @icloud.com addresses

Apple originally intended to transition the Hide My Email feature, which provides iCloud+ subscribers with temporary email aliases, to an @private.icloud.com suffix. Users argued that the new domain would allow websites to more readily reject the aliases, weakening the tool's privacy value. After widespread criticism on platforms such as Reddit, Apple announced on Monday that the aliases will remain under the @icloud.com domain, without providing a public rationale.

Daring Fireball’s John Gruber, who first reported the reversal, noted that internal staff had opposed the change from the start. The episode follows a previously disclosed bug that exposed users' real email addresses when messages were marked as spam, a flaw Apple corrected more than a year after it was identified. The company’s latest update restores the status quo for the privacy service.
