Applied Materials to boost its holding in BESI to roughly 20 percent
Applied Materials announced plans to increase its ownership in Dutch chip-packaging firm BE Semiconductor Industries to about 20%, up from 9%.
On Monday, Applied Materials disclosed an intention to raise its equity position in BE Semiconductor Industries, a Netherlands-based supplier of semiconductor equipment, to roughly 20 percent, up from its current 9 percent holding. The increase will be executed via an accelerated share purchase agreement, subject to review by U.S. antitrust authorities. This expanded stake reinforces a partnership that started in 2020, focusing on hybrid bonding and other cutting-edge chip-connection and packaging technologies essential for next-generation AI semiconductors.
While the companies will work more closely on these innovations, Applied Materials stated it does not plan to acquire a larger share or obtain board representation at BESI. The collaboration aims to accelerate development of advanced packaging solutions for high-performance chips.
Why it matters
The larger stake strengthens Applied Materials' role in AI-focused chip packaging, a fast-growing segment of the semiconductor industry.
