Arcadia Couple Arrested for Conspiracy to Abuse Over 20 Surrogate-Born Children
Guojon Xuan and Sylvia Zhang were taken into custody on suspicion of conspiring to abuse more than 20 children born via surrogacy at their Arcadia mansion, where the kids lived under constant surveillance and were mistreated by live-in nannies.
Los Angeles County authorities arrested Guojon Xuan, 65, and his wife Sylvia Zhang, 38, on Tuesday for allegedly conspiring to abuse more than twenty children born through surrogacy at their sprawling Arcadia mansion. The Special Victims Bureau disclosed that the nine-bedroom residence functioned like a home-school, with six live-in nannies overseeing children who all sported identical buzz cuts and were watched by a network of roughly 25 surveillance cameras.
Police investigations began after Zhang brought a two-month-old son to Children’s Hospital in East Hollywood with a head injury that doctors identified as a brain bleed. One nanny, Chunmei Li, was charged with assault likely to cause death for allegedly smashing the infant’s head, but she escaped to China before arrest. Officials say the other caregivers also left the country, and that Xuan and Zhang were aware of the mistreatment yet failed to stop it. District Attorney Nathan Hochman is expected to brief the media on the case, while Xuan’s attorney described his client’s motive as raising many children to become future contributors to society.
Why it matters
The arrests highlight severe child-abuse risks in private surrogacy arrangements and raise questions about oversight of large-scale family homes.
