Arctic shipping surge sets new record as Russia and China deepen cooperation

A fresh report shows 104 cargo vessels used the Northeast Passage this year, surpassing previous totals and highlighting growing Russian-Chinese collaboration in Arctic routes.

According to a new Nord University study, 104 cargo ships traversed the Northeast Passage, outpacing the 97 voyages in the earlier year and 103 in the year before that. The traffic was almost evenly split between eastbound and westbound trips. Scientists warn that reduced sea-ice cover makes the waters more accessible but also introduces fresh navigational risks.

Two distinct shipping streams use the Arctic route: one heading to Russian ports and another linking Asia directly to Europe, a shortcut that can halve travel time compared with the Suez Canal. Recent high-level talks in Beijing saw Russian and Chinese officials pledge coordinated maritime strategies and infrastructure development along the passage, aiming to make trade cheaper and more secure.

Why it matters

The rise in Arctic traffic reshapes global trade routes and raises security concerns for Norway and Europe.
