Argentina confronts record suicide surge as families demand action
Suicide has become the top cause of death for Argentinians aged 15-34, with rates climbing sharply and prompting protests in Buenos Aires.
Argentina now records suicide as the leading cause of death among people aged 15 to 34, with a rate of 11.8 per 100,000 inhabitants, according to the Criminal Policy Observatory and the Security Ministry. The figures represent a 57.6% rise since 2017 and a 22.6% jump from the previous year. In response, dozens of bereaved relatives marched in Buenos Aires, emphasizing that open conversation can prevent further loss.
Graciela Salazar, who lost her daughter in 2023, and Ariana Villarreal, whose brother died 11 years ago, highlighted the historic neglect of mental-health services and the need for greater state investment. The Argentine Association of Mental Health warned that suicide is a complex issue linked to job loss, insecurity and debt, and called for urgent public-policy interventions.
Why it matters
Rising suicides signal a growing public-health crisis that demands immediate policy and societal response.
