Argentina launches citizenship-for-investment scheme amid low foreign direct investment

Argentina announced a program granting citizenship to foreign investors who make a qualifying contribution to the state treasury, set to start at the end of 2026.

Argentina unveiled a citizenship-by-investment program that will begin operating at the close of 2026. Applicants may obtain nationality by either making a direct, non-refundable contribution to the state treasury or by buying a dedicated state bond, with provisions extending benefits to spouses and children when further payments are provided. Officials state that the collected capital will be directed toward strengthening the country’s fiscal position and that a rigorous oversight system will track the money to curb illicit flows.

In tandem with the scheme, the administration is removing existing limits on land ownership by foreigners. The move follows data showing Argentina recorded the lowest direct foreign investment among leading Latin American economies in 2025, according to the OECD.

Why it matters

The plan aims to attract foreign capital and boost Argentina's fiscal health while easing land-ownership rules for investors.
