The 25-page filing alleges the firms promoted products such as Dark and Lovely, Optimum and Mizani to Black and Brown women without informing them of increased uterine and ovarian cancer risks, violating state consumer-fraud laws. Kris Mayes argues the companies prioritized profit over safety, despite scientific studies dating back to the mid-1990s linking relaxer ingredients to cancer.
The lawsuit seeks monetary restitution for consumers and a court order requiring clear health warnings on the products. L’Oréal and SoftSheen-Carson have not responded to inquiries.
