Arizona man avoids death penalty by pleading guilty to 2023 hiker murder
Zion Teasley, 25, pleaded guilty to the 2023 stabbing death of hiker Lauren Heike and secured a plea that removes the death penalty.
Zion Teasley, 25, has entered a guilty plea for the 2023 murder of 29-year-old hiker Lauren Heike on a rural Phoenix trail, where he chased and stabbed her fifteen times before abandoning her body. Investigators matched his DNA to evidence found on Heike’s shoe and identified him through a criminal database after a five-day manhunt. Court documents reveal Teasley acted randomly, driven by a personal crisis over his gender identity, and he had accessed Heike’s social media after the killing.
The plea agreement eliminates the death-penalty option, replacing it with a natural-life sentence, and also resolves a 2019 sexual-exploitation charge while dropping two prior assault-related felonies. He is scheduled for sentencing in December.
Why it matters
The plea ends a high-profile murder case and prevents a death-penalty trial, impacting victims' families and local criminal justice policy.
