Arizona Senate launches probe into Governor Hobbs over group-home funding
The Arizona Senate will subpoena Governor Katie Hobbs to testify about alleged pay-to-play ties with Sunshine Residential Homes, a foster-care provider that received large rate hikes after donating to her campaign.
Arizona State Senator Jake Hoffman, chair of the Senate Committee on Government, said the Senate will conduct a formal investigation into Governor Katie Hobbs over the Sunshine Residential Homes issue. He alleges that executives from the foster-care group contributed more than $500,000 to Hobbs, her campaign and related funds, and subsequently secured a 56% per-child rate increase, positioning the provider as the highest-paid in the state.
Hoffman issued subpoenas ordering Hobbs to appear before the committee on September 29 and also seeks testimony and documents from Attorney General Kris Mayes. The governor’s campaign, represented by Michael Beyer, dismissed the move as a political stunt ahead of the election, while the Attorney General’s office, through communications director Richie Taylor, reiterated that its prior investigation found no evidence of criminal conduct. Both sides argue the inquiry is a partisan effort consuming taxpayer resources just weeks before ballots are mailed.
