Arizona State hockey player remains comatose with no chance of recovery after workout collapse

During an outdoor conditioning drill on Aug. 20, Arizona State University hockey defenseman Matthew Mayich collapsed after showing signs of disorientation. The 21-year-old sophomore was rushed to a nearby hospital and subsequently moved to the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, where he now lies in a coma with doctors saying there is zero chance of recovery. The session, lasting about 50 minutes, was overseen by retired Special Forces veteran Tim Ziesel, whom the player’s attorney describes as demanding and harsh.

Mayich’s family lawyer, Robert Carey, alleges the university is downplaying the workout’s intensity and urges suspension of coaches and staff while an independent inquiry is conducted. Arizona State officials have said they are conducting a thorough review of the events surrounding the workout.
