Armed militants target civilians in Manipur's hill villages, sparking fear and displacement
Militant groups attacked residents of Longpi and other hill villages in Manipur, killing several civilians, including a pregnant woman, and prompting villagers to flee.
On September 13, militants ambushed villagers in Longpi, Manipur, killing Thangvel Roel Gangte and Julie Singson, who was two months pregnant, and later causing the death of Ester Gangte in hospital. The same day, a Kuki home in L. Tollen was attacked, resulting in the death of mother of five, Lhingzangai Singsit, and her husband. Two days later, Naga militants allegedly shot a 76-year-old woman and a younger companion gathering firewood in Leisangphai.
Over the past weeks, at least 23 civilians have been killed across the hill districts, with both Naga and Kuki communities suffering losses. Residents report that security forces are absent, leaving villages vulnerable to further attacks and prompting mass displacement. Community leaders have condemned the lack of effective intervention by the Narendra Modi government and Manipur’s BJP administration.
